This unique type of portrait is not intended to look exactly like the desired character, but rather to be a distorted representation of it. Every custom order is sculpted and painted on a human being. Once the work is created, no modifications are allowed. The artist may sell and exhibit editions of the work.
Desmeules has described her art as a form of “surgery” that does not require invasive scalpels or lasers, just massive layers of acrylic paint, plastic, paper and hair. Upon viewing Desmeules’ finished product, one might be inclined to assume it was created at an LSD-induced papier-mâché party.
