This unique kind of portrait is not intended to look exactly like the desired character, but rather to be a distorted representation of the same. Each custom portrait is sculpted and painted on a human being. Once the representation is done, no modifications are allowed. The artist keeps the copyright of the work and can exhibit and sell editions of it.
No matter who her subject is, or how visible they are in the public eye, Desmeules uses her paintbrush as a “scalpel” to brilliantly disfigure and dissect the exterior image, thereby uncovering a powerful—and universal—sense of human vulnerability.
